SSoA Live Project Guest Posters

On Monday the 24th September the Live Project team where introduced to the Furnace Park project, based in and around a brownfield site in Shalesmoor, opposite the Grade II listed cementation furnace which was part of Doncaster Works.

We are a group of 12 masters students from the University of Sheffield School of Architecture, working in collaboration with SKINN and plastiCities to produce a framework for temporary, innovative and active spaces that can be implemented across Sheffield’s underused urban wild-scapes. We aim to explore the re-use of materials, sustainable temporary construction and creative site uses which can enable multiple collaborations between communities and the University, researchers and creative practitioners. We hope to develop a self-build kit of parts, so that the ideas tested at Furnace Park can be shared with the rest of Sheffield.

Last weekend we expanded on Furnace Park’s earlier public participation events with the “51st idea for Sheffield”, entitled Sheffield’s Urban Voids – What Would You Do? We asked visitors to the Festival of the Mind 50 Ideas for Sheffield exhibition to share their ideas for a better Sheffield and what they would like Furnace Park to be used for. Below are the many responses – ranging from the practical to the beautiful and the fantastical:
